What to Do If You See Someone You Know at a Lifestyle Club
It's the lifestyle scenario everyone dreads and almost everyone eventually lives: you round a corner at a club and lock eyes with someone from your vanilla life. Here's exactly how to handle it.
The golden rule
Mutual, silent discretion. You both saw each other; you both know what it means; you both say nothing — to each other, and to anyone else, ever. This is the lifestyle's unwritten law, and it protects both of you.
In the moment
- A small nod and a smile is enough. It says 'I see you, and this stays here.' That's it. No big reunion, no awkward small talk mid-party.
- Don't avoid them so obviously it becomes a thing. A brief, warm acknowledgment is far less awkward than dramatically dodging into another room.
- Don't approach to chat if they seem to want privacy. Read the room — some people freeze when recognized. Give them space.
After the event
You do nothing. You don't text them. You don't bring it up at the next PTA meeting. You don't wink knowingly across the produce aisle. The deal is: you each pretend it didn't happen, and you each keep the other's secret the way you'd want yours kept.
If they bring it up
If they raise it later — privately, outside lifestyle context — you can acknowledge it warmly: 'Great to see you, that's our thing too — obviously it stays between us.' Then drop it. If they want to connect in the lifestyle, they'll say so; if they don't, you've still protected their privacy.
The beautiful part
Realize what just happened: you discovered an ally. A fellow lifestyle person in your vanilla world who now shares your secret and will guard yours because you guard theirs. That's not awkward — that's a small, quiet gift.
If it's someone you really can't ignore
A boss, a direct report, a client — that's the rare case where discretion gets complicated. The move is still silence, plus maybe a private, kind word acknowledging the awkwardness and agreeing to keep professional and lifestyle lives separate. Most reasonable people are enormously relieved to have it handled kindly.
Handled with grace, the 'oh no, it's my dentist' moment becomes one of the funniest stories you'll never tell.
