Where to Stay in Tampa Bay: Tampa vs. St. Pete vs. Clearwater

Tampa Bay is not one single destination.

A weekend here can mean staying in downtown Tampa, spending the afternoon in St. Petersburg, heading to Clearwater Beach, and attending an event or lifestyle venue somewhere else entirely.

Where you stay can make a major difference in how much time you spend driving or ridesharing — and whether your trip feels easy or scattered.

This guide compares Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater and the surrounding areas so you can choose a base that fits the kind of weekend you are actually planning. Pair it with our Tampa Bay lifestyle travel guide for the full venue, event, and trip-planning picture.

Downtown Tampa

Downtown Tampa is the urban core of the metro and the most central base for nightlife, restaurants, and events on the Tampa side of the bay. Hotels here put you within a short rideshare of most Tampa-area plans and close to the convention center, arenas, and the riverwalk.

It is a strong choice for couples who want an urban base and easy airport access — Tampa International Airport is a short ride away. Walkability varies by area but is stronger here than in the suburban parts of the metro. The trade-off is that downtown Tampa is not a beach destination; if the beach is a priority, you will be crossing the bay to get to one.

Best for: Couples who want nightlife, restaurants, events, and a central urban base.

Ybor City

Ybor City is Tampa's nightlife-focused historic district — a walkable cluster of bars, clubs, and late-night atmosphere a short rideshare from downtown Tampa. Once you are inside Ybor, you can move between venues on foot, which is rare in Tampa Bay.

It is louder and more nightlife-heavy than other Tampa areas, and better suited to visitors prioritizing a big night out than a quiet beach stay. The district's character is its own thing: historic cigar-era brick streets, a strong bar scene, and energy that peaks late. It is not where you go for a calm waterfront morning.

Best for: Couples who want late-night energy and nightlife within walking distance.

St. Petersburg / Downtown St. Pete

Downtown St. Petersburg offers one of the most walkable cores in Tampa Bay, with a strong restaurant, bar, arts, and waterfront scene. It feels more relaxed than Tampa, with a balance of nightlife and daytime activities — museums, parks, the pier, and the bayfront all close together.

It is a convenient base for St. Pete Beach and other Gulf Coast outings, since the beach is a short drive south rather than across the bay. The trade-off is distance: downtown St. Pete is farther from Tampa International Airport and from Tampa-based venues and events, so cross-bay trips become part of the math.

Best for: Couples who want a more walkable, stylish, restaurant-and-waterfront-focused weekend.

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is the strongest beach-vacation feel in the area — resorts, beach bars, and a sunset atmosphere that is the main event rather than a side trip. If the beach is a major part of your trip, this is the obvious choice.

The trade-off is location. Clearwater sits on a barrier island on the Gulf side, which makes it less convenient for Tampa nightlife and many inland events. Traffic to and from the beach can be significant at busy times, and rideshare costs add up quickly when you are crossing the metro for the nightlife side of the weekend.

Best for: Couples who want a beach-first weekend with nightlife as a secondary priority.

St. Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach is beach-focused like Clearwater, but sits somewhat closer to downtown St. Pete, which makes it a good fit for couples who want to mix genuine beach time with St. Pete nightlife and restaurants without the longer haul from Clearwater.

It has a relaxed resort feel and a different pace than the Tampa side of the bay. You will still need transportation for Tampa-area activities and events, but the distance to St. Pete's downtown core is shorter, which makes a "beach by day, St. Pete by night" weekend more practical.

Best for: Couples who want a Gulf beach stay with easier access to St. Pete.

Should You Stay Near a Lifestyle Venue or Event?

Proximity can be convenient, but do not choose lodging based solely on one venue unless that venue or event is the anchor of your entire trip. Tampa Bay covers a large geographic area, and a single club or event is only one piece of a weekend that might also include restaurants, beaches, other nightlife, and daytime plans.

Consider the whole weekend — where you will eat, whether you want to walk to anything, how you will get around after drinks, and what you will do during the day. Verify event locations and venue schedules before booking around them, because lifestyle venues change nights, move events, and update policies regularly.

This article is about where to sleep and how to get around. The Happy Swinger does not assume any hotel permits parties, outside guests, or lifestyle activity — always confirm a property's current guest and visitor policies directly before booking.

Transportation Across Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay is spread out. Tampa, St. Pete, and Clearwater are separate areas connected by bridges, and the bay itself is a real barrier — crossing it takes real time, especially during rush hour and on weekends when beach traffic builds.

A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Bridges and traffic matter. The Howard Frankland and other bay bridges can slow significantly at peak times; what looks like a 20-minute drive can become much longer.
  • Rideshare works well for shorter movements within Tampa, within St. Pete, or to a single venue, but crossing the bay repeatedly adds up fast.
  • Staying near the majority of your plans reduces friction. If most of your weekend is on the Tampa side, stay on the Tampa side; if it is St. Pete and the beach, stay on the Gulf side.
  • Rental cars can help for multi-area itineraries — a beach day in Clearwater, dinner in Tampa, an event in St. Pete — but they are not necessary for every trip, and beach and resort parking fees can add up.
  • Tampa International Airport is generally the main airport for most visitors and is conveniently close to downtown Tampa.

How We Would Choose

For a nightlife-focused first trip, downtown Tampa or Ybor City is usually the easiest base — you are close to restaurants, events, and the airport, and you avoid repeated cross-bay rides.

For a more relaxed, walkable weekend with restaurants, waterfront, and nightlife, downtown St. Pete is a strong choice — you get walkability and a stylish scene, with the Gulf beach a short drive south.

For a true beach getaway, Clearwater Beach or St. Pete Beach makes more sense — but expect longer rides to Tampa-based nightlife or events, and plan the beach-to-nightlife logistics in advance.

The best choice depends on where most of your actual plans are located.

Before You Book

A short checklist that keeps a Tampa Bay weekend from feeling scattered:

  • Map your event and venue locations before choosing a hotel area.
  • Check bridge travel times between Tampa, St. Pete, and Clearwater at the times you will actually be moving.
  • Consider airport distance — downtown Tampa is closest; St. Pete and Clearwater are farther.
  • Review parking fees, especially at beach resorts.
  • Check hotel visitor policies before booking around a venue or event.
  • Verify event dates — lifestyle calendars change.
  • Check cancellation terms — plans in the lifestyle change too.
  • Decide whether your priority is nightlife, beach, or both, and pick the side of the bay that matches.
