Miami & Fort Lauderdale Lifestyle Travel Guide

South Florida's lifestyle capital — on-premise clubs in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, a clothing-optional resort on Hollywood Beach, and South Beach to Las Olas nightlife.

Last verified Aug 2026

Miami & Fort Lauderdale is South Florida's lifestyle capital — a multi-city market that stretches from South Beach and Downtown/Brickell in Miami, up through Fort Lauderdale and its beach, to Hollywood in between.

The market is anchored by three distinct lifestyle properties: Miami Velvet (Doral/NW Miami), Trapeze Club (Tamarac/Fort Lauderdale) and the clothing-optional Rooftop Resort (Hollywood Beach), which sits midway between the two cities. Not every neighborhood contains lifestyle venues — most of South Florida is built for beach, nightlife and convention travel. THS helps you choose the right area for lodging, nightlife, events, beaches and your lifestyle plans, and to understand how Miami and Fort Lauderdale relate as separate cities.

Choosing a hotel because it says "Miami" or "Fort Lauderdale" doesn't mean it's close to the venue, event or beach you came for — this guide helps you match your stay to your plans.

Planning your Miami / Fort Lauderdale trip

When to go: October–April is peak season — warm, dry and packed with weekend events. Summer (May–Sept) is quieter and more humid, with smaller local crowds and lower hotel rates.

Trip length: A long weekend (Fri–Sun) is the sweet spot — most clubs run Friday and Saturday nights, and Rooftop Resort's pool scene peaks Saturday daytime.

Booking lead time: Reserve Miami Velvet and Trapeze memberships/passes a week or two ahead for Saturday nights and holiday weekends. Rooftop Resort books up for lifestyle-theme weekends — book 3–4 weeks out.

Budget: Expect $40–80 per couple per night for club entry plus BYOB, and $150–300/night for a solid South Beach or Fort Lauderdale Beach hotel. Rooftop Resort runs ~$200–350/night depending on the theme weekend.

Where to stay near Miami / Fort Lauderdale lifestyle venues

Position your stay around whichever anchor you'll visit most. Near Miami Velvet (Doral/NW Miami): South Beach or Brickell hotels put you 10–20 minutes away and keep Miami's nightlife on your doorstep. Near Trapeze (Fort Lauderdale/Tamarac): Fort Lauderdale Beach resorts are 10–15 minutes from the club and offer a relaxed beachfront daytime scene. For a full-immersion stay, Rooftop Resort on Hollywood Beach is the only clothing-optional lifestyle hotel in the region — stay on-site and you may never need a rideshare. All three areas have robust rideshare coverage for cross-market nights.

South Florida's waterfronts — Biscayne Bay, the Intracoastal and the ocean — are loaded with dinner-and-cocktails options. Pick a spot near where you're staying to keep the night simple.

Beach sunset

A South Beach or Fort Lauderdale Beach sunset is the easy pre-dinner move; the broadwalk at Hollywood Beach is a lower-key alternative.

South Beach nightlife

When you want Miami energy, South Beach's clubs, lounges and late-night scene are the city's signature — a different feel from the mainland lifestyle venues.

Las Olas dinner & drinks

Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale is a walkable dinner-and-drinks corridor — a strong date-night base for a Fort Lauderdale trip.

Yacht / boat excursion

A daytime boat or charter excursion is a quintessential South Florida couples activity — available out of Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Spa / pool day

A resort or day-spa/pool day is a low-key way to recover between nights out — plenty of options across South Beach, Brickell and Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Keep date-night plans at the activity/area level unless you're pulling a specific business from the THS directory.

Bars & nightlife

Beyond the lifestyle clubs, South Beach's Mango's and LIV set the mainstream nightlife tone, while Wynwood's bar crawl is the best low-key warm-up. Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale is a walkable string of cocktails and live music. Rooftop Resort's weekend nightclub doubles as a lifestyle nightlife hub if you're staying on-site.

Nearby attractions for daytime

Daytime: South Beach and the Art Deco walking tour, Wynwood Walls (street art), Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, an Everglades airboat tour (about an hour from Miami), Fort Lauderdale's Las Olas Boulevard and the water taxi, and the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk. Most couples pair one lifestyle night with two or three mainstream tourist days.

  • Waterfront dinner and rooftop cocktails near your hotel.
  • A night at Miami Velvet (Miami) or Trapeze (Fort Lauderdale) — reserve ahead.

Saturday

  • Beach or pool day — South Beach, Fort Lauderdale Beach, or a day pass at Rooftop Resort on Hollywood Beach.
  • Brunch and downtime.
  • Group dinner within ~15 minutes of your evening plans.
  • A lifestyle event or club night — check the events calendar for takeovers like the Miami Lifestyle Takeover.

Sunday

  • Waterfront brunch and a beach walk or broadwalk stroll.
  • Relaxed resort or shopping time.
  • Checkout and departure.

This is only a sample itinerary — confirm event dates and venue hours directly before you travel.

What to pack

Two outfits minimum: upscale clubwear (Miami Velvet and Trapeze enforce dress-to-impress) and a resort/pool look for Rooftop. Women: cocktail dresses or sexy resort wear; men: button-downs and slacks (no shorts or athletic wear at the on-premise clubs). Bring BYOB for Miami Velvet and Trapeze. Pack toiletries, condoms and lube, a small lockable bag for valuables, and a light cover-up for clothing-optional areas. Flip-flops for the beach and rooftop pool.

Flying into Miami / Fort Lauderdale

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the primary airport for Miami and Miami Beach — closest to Miami Velvet in Doral, South Beach, and Downtown/Brickell. It has the widest international and domestic flight availability for the southern half of the market.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) sits between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood and is the closer airport for Trapeze in Tamarac, Fort Lauderdale Beach, and Rooftop Resort on Hollywood Beach. It often offers competitive fares and can be the better fit for a Fort Lauderdale- or Hollywood-based trip.

Both airports can be useful depending on flight availability, where you're staying, where your event is, and your rental-car or rideshare plans. Compare MIA and FLL for your trip rather than assuming one is always better.

Getting around Miami / Fort Lauderdale

South Florida geography is a major planning issue — Miami and Fort Lauderdale are separate cities roughly 30 miles apart, connected by I-95 and the Florida Turnpike.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is widely useful across Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, but the distance between the cities and between the beaches and the venues is real, and traffic on I-95 and across the causeways adds time, especially on weekends. A rental car helps travelers moving between multiple cities or mixing a beach vacation with venue nights, but expect to pay for hotel and resort parking. Beach and downtown areas can require significant travel between them.

The practical point: choose your hotel relative to the event or venue you plan to attend — not the general word "Miami." A South Beach hotel isn't necessarily close to a Fort Lauderdale venue, and vice versa. Map the venue-to-hotel distance before booking, and plan transportation before a night out — don't drive after drinking.

Lifestyle travel tips

  • Choose lodging based on event and venue location — Miami and Fort Lauderdale are separate cities; a "Miami" hotel isn't necessarily close to a Fort Lauderdale venue, and vice versa. Map the venue-to-hotel distance first.
  • Account for traffic — I-95, the causeways to the beaches and downtown areas add real drive time, especially on weekends and event nights.
  • Understand the geography — Miami and Fort Lauderdale are not one compact walkable destination; budget travel time between them.
  • Verify club and event rules before attending — dress codes, membership, couples/singles policies and theme nights vary by night.
  • Confirm ID and membership requirements — the on-premise clubs are 21+ and members-only; bring valid ID.
  • Check hotel visitor policies — THS does not assume a hotel or resort permits parties, outside guests or lifestyle activity. Confirm current policies directly before booking.
  • Plan rideshare/transportation before drinking — don't drive after drinking; arrange rides in advance for venue nights.
  • Confirm event dates directly with the venue or organizer before booking non-refundable travel.
  • Reserve hotels early for major weekends — South Florida sells out around Art Basel, spring break, boat show weeks and holiday weekends.
  • Protect your privacy when posting travel plans and photos.

Local laws & important considerations

Florida's public indecency and lewdness laws are strict outside licensed venues — behavior that's fine inside a permitted on-premise club is illegal in public, including beaches and cars. Clothing-optional is legal only at designated resort properties (Rooftop), not public beaches. Drinking age is 21; carry ID. Don't carry cannabis — recreational use is not legal in Florida and possession can derail a trip. Rideshare, not driving, after drinking.
