What Are Hard Limits and Soft Limits?

Limits are the boundaries around what you will and won't do. The lifestyle splits them into two useful kinds: hard limits and soft limits.

Hard limits

A hard limit is non-negotiable. It's a 'never, under any circumstance.' Examples: 'No bareback,' 'No kissing,' 'No separate rooms.' Hard limits don't move, and pushing against them is a boundary violation, not a negotiation.

Soft limits

A soft limit is 'maybe, with discussion.' It's something you're open to under the right circumstances, with the right person, after a conversation — but not automatically. Examples: 'Soft limit on playing with single men,' 'Soft limit on separate rooms.' A soft limit is a yellow light, not a red one.

Why the distinction helps

Naming a limit as hard or soft tells your partner — and any play partner — exactly how to treat it. A hard limit is a stop sign; a soft limit is a 'let's talk first.' That clarity prevents the awkward in-the-moment guesswork that ruins nights.

How to set them

  • Make a list together of both kinds before you ever play.
  • Be specific. 'Be respectful' isn't a limit; 'no kissing in front of me' is.
  • Communicate them to play partners up front.
  • Revisit them regularly — limits evolve as you grow.
