Consent in the Lifestyle
Consent is the single most important concept in the lifestyle. It's not a formality — it's the foundation everything else stands on. Here's the full code.
Enthusiastic, not reluctant
A real yes is eager, not extracted. 'I guess so' is not consent. If you have to talk someone into it, you don't have consent — you have compliance, and that's not the same thing.
Ongoing, not one-time
A yes at the start of the night isn't a yes for everything that follows. Consent applies to each act, each person, each moment. Check in. A yes to kissing isn't a yes to more.
Reversible, any time
Anyone can withdraw consent at any moment, no explanation needed. 'Actually, let's pause' is always allowed, always honored, never penalized. Changing your mind isn't breaking a promise — it's the definition of consent.
Specific, not blanket
Consent covers exactly what was agreed to — and nothing more. A yes to one partner isn't a yes to another. A yes tonight isn't a yes next time. Get specific: who, what, where.
Sober enough to give it
Intoxicated consent isn't real consent. If you or they are too far gone, the answer is no. Read our drinks & drugs guide.
How to ask
Keep it warm and direct: 'Can I kiss you?' 'Is it okay if I…?' Asking isn't unsexy — it's the ultimate green light. The couples who ask are the couples everyone wants to play with.
How to hear a no
A no is a preference, not a verdict. Accept it with a smile, move on, and never push, pout, or negotiate. Read our rejection guide.
When in doubt, don't
If you're unsure whether you have consent, you don't. Pause and ask. The lifestyle rewards people who'd rather check than assume.
Consent done well is what makes the lifestyle feel safe, free, and fun. Get it right, and everything else follows.
