What Is ENM (Ethical Non-Monogamy)?
ENM stands for ethical non-monogamy: any relationship style where partners consensually agree to romantic or sexual connections outside the couple. 'Ethical' is the doing-the-work part — honesty, communication, and agreements both people actually choose.
The umbrella
ENM is the big tent. Under it sit swinging, open relationships, and polyamory, along with hybrids like hotwifing, stag/vixen, and hall passes.
What 'ethical' means
It's not the arrangement that makes it ethical — it's the consent and honesty. Both partners know, agree, and can renegotiate. Cheating isn't non-monogamy gone wrong; it's just monogamy's shadow. ENM replaces secrecy with communication.
How it differs from cheating
Cheating breaks an agreement. ENM is the agreement. Everything is disclosed, consented to, and revisit-able.
Most couples land in the middle
Plenty of ENM couples don't fit a neat label — they swing sometimes, have a regular play partner, take breaks, renegotiate. Labels are tools, not uniforms.
ENM isn't one thing; it's the value system underneath all of them: consent, honesty, and communication over secrecy.
