What Is Polyamory?
Polyamory is the practice of having multiple romantic (and often sexual) relationships at the same time, with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. Love is on the table, not just sex — which is the key difference from swinging.
How it differs from swinging
Swinging is couple-centered and sex-focused; outside connections are shared adventures, not romances. Polyamory is individual-centered and love-focused: a poly person may have more than one committed, emotional partnership.
Shapes it takes
- Hierarchical poly: a primary partnership plus other partners.
- Non-hierarchical / relationship anarchy: no relationship is ranked above another.
- Kitchen-table poly: everyone involved is comfortable enough to share a meal together.
The shared values
Polyamory and swinging both sit under ENM. Both run on consent, honesty, and relentless communication. The difference is what's on the table: sex and social fun vs. love and partnership.
If you're curious
Polyamory asks for serious emotional and logistical work — calendars, communication, and managing feelings across multiple bonds. It's not 'swinging plus feelings' by accident; it's a deliberate structure. Read our ENM vs. swinging vs. poly comparison before deciding if it's for you.
